ANY FORMER CAMPERS OUT THERE who accidentally found this page please contact me. I was the youngest camper at camp my first year 1954, (6 years-old) all the way from Southern Ohio. I was homesick that first summer but never after that! Ronnie Friedberg was a year older than me as was Charles Sachs, and Louis Goldbloom. Eric Englund was there and Stevie Price, with his beautiful older sister Miriam. Rush Holt came up my 2nd summer  . Counselors included Mickey Compton, Ed Evans, David Aikens, my cousin Larry Melby, and of course my uncle Andy Melby and his wife Dorothy "Mother Melby"(my dad's sister).

Anyone out there remember the boys Saranac Canoe Trip in 1958 when the counselors paddled into town for "supplies" leaving us little guys and Andy Melby on Tom's Rock? They came back suffering from "food poisoning" and even through the heavy rain we cold hear them wretching all night.

Did anyone arrive at camp via Train to Saranac Lake? My sister and I would get on the train in Dayton, Ohio and it took two days to get to Saranac Lake.

Anyone go on a snipe hunt or get sent to the canoe for the smoke shifter? How many brought money along on the Mt. Duncan climb for the hotdog stand that was supposed to be on top?

How many of you were there when the BIG sailboat was there, the one with the keel; not sure when they got rid of it but it was there at least through 1958. Andy Melby taught us to sail. I went home to Ohio and taught my high school buddies how to sail. The local state park rented SunFish. Now my former students own big sail boats on the Great Lakes and in Los Angeles and I got an old canvas canoe with a sailing rig I built for it.(Never have had a chance to try the sailing rig) (May be too old, now)

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?    DOUG PIERCE?   LOUIS GOLDBLOOM,  CHI MCCLAIN, STEVE REXFORD, ANDREW NIILSEN, DAVID REESE, DAVID CHASE?  JACK ECK,  ANYONE KNOW?

Just received this from Gail Manor Marone: (June, 2022)

Hi Bill
I had to reach out and tell you how much I enjoyed your Hawkeye Reunion posting. I am
AMAZED at yours and others memories…..I’m very envious.

I attended camp for 5 summers, my brother I believe 2 summers. We were there in the
60’s so most of your memories did not overlap but the pictures..the foundation..some of
the names, definitely did. I just loved it.

There are a few memories I have:.
Blue Heron ¦having sing-a-longs and pretty sure counselors lived there.

Wednesday hiking days, ugh I hated climbing mountains. One time I faked a sprained ankle.
I think it was on Catamount and they called me out on it and I had to finish the
hike plus whiteface ¦haystacks ..but the views were glorious.Trading a sandwich for a
coveted orange.

My first Kiss ! Can you imagine! I think I was 10 or 11, and he snuck out from boys
camp and we met in the girls bathroom,.how romantic. Pretty sure others helped
orchestrate no way I could have pulled that off on my own.

The Bats ! Ugh!

But by far the biggest memory was everyone gathering down at the boathouse to watch the
first man on the moon. Can you imagine? I was up in the loft looking down at one TV of
course but it was Amazing ..you could hear a pin drop !

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. I loved it !

 CAMPER MEMORIES-

Boathouse 2021

August- September 2021

My wife, Martha and I returned to the Adirondacks this Summer for the first time in 25 years. We were returning to the place we honeymooned 50 years ago. How many former campers ended up going up there on their honeymoon? In 1971 we stayed at the Saranac Hotel for a week. It was hot and there was no air conditioning. Then we spent a week in a cabin at Cedar Lodge and nearly froze to death. We were renting from the Douglas's and when we asked for more blanket Mrs.Dougles charged us $5.00 rental on each blanket. We also came over for a dinner at Hartzie's Table with Fred Matthias.

This summer we stopped in to see Rush Holt and his wife. The last time we saw each other, we were 12 years-old. What a great place they have. It was really great to see them. Gary Tabor was renting Whipoorwill. It's amazing how the place has not changed all that much. The Loon is gone, but most of the bunks are still there. I drove Martha crazy by singing camp songs while we were driving. This trip we camped at Douglas campground which is now run by the granddaughter. It was a bit run down but the price was right for parking our camp trailer.

We spent two weeks driving around the area and shooting photos.  I will post a couple of them.
